Fagradalsfjall
I’m so happy that the adventure consultants decided, last minute, to abandon one day’s itinerary to go see the erupting volcano. Obviously we had to be very flexible since existing paths had been shut due to volcanic gas drift. The authorities were posting daily updates as to which route we were allowed to take.
We started on the other side of the valley and if you haven’t trekked volcanic rocks, scree and mud in pouring rain, hail and wet snow, it’s a slippery experience. They had to put in fixed ropes where there were newly created walkways to get to to the ridge. I was already worried how we were going to fare on the way down. Abseiling would’ve been easier.
I’m sure many a calorie was burned on the way up and you experience both overheating (too many layers) and cold as you get absolutely drenched even with gore tex layers. How is that possible?!
Anyway, it was well worth it to see the lava spewing out of the top of the volcano.
Now that’s the official end of the actual adventure with the company.
Many thanks to my multi-adventure consultants, Backroads Premiere. The food was fabulous, the hotels good, and organisation faultless. Thanks to Gonzalo and Olga for being great tour leaders and Ish for the support and sundowners (even if the sun literally doesn’t set). And thanks for the super jeeps for being able to go over rivers and lava fields.
This is my second trip (Dolomites was the first) with Backtoads Premiere and there will more.
I’m now off to do touristy things like the Golden Circle. Too much to see in Iceland! I'll keep you updated.
