The Phallus As An Amulet Against Evil

 

Let me begin with the story of the Divine Madman. Drukba Kunley was a Tibetan monk who had unusual methods of achieving enlightenment including bedding 5000 women. Women would seek his blessing by sleeping with him. In other words he tried to impart the idea that you can achieve and impart enlightenment whilst having a healthy sex life. He is an enlightened man so Buddha like  

It’s everywhere!

On masks, too.

The practice of phallus paintings on houses evolved from his teachings, warding off evil and achieving fertility. His penis is known as the “Thunderbolt of Flaming Wisdom. There is a temple dedicated to him and is visited by those wanting to conceive. 

The temple (above) is called Chimi Lhakhang. The Divine Madman is also known to have a liking for alcohol, so there is a fair amount of booze offered at his altar. Photography is  forbidden in temples so you just need to take my word for it. 

On to other things. Whilst leaving Punakha, we came across some archery (Bhutan’s national sport) being played. It’s a Sunday after all and the boys are gathered for a few beers, a bit of trash talking, and some singing. 

What you don’t realise at first glance is, the other team is 150 metres away! They have a shoot out while standing close to the target, and if their team hits the board from the other side, there is a bit of song and dance. I am in awe they don’t take out the people of the other team since they are slightly inebriated and the target is a long way away. 

We joined in the fun and a bit of song and dance. They were very welcoming, as the Bhutanese are. Great fun. 

Finally we arrive in Gangtey Lodge at 3000 metres (just under 10,000 feet) for the night and some aggressive hiking tomorrow. Another nice hotel with scenic views. They also break into song when you arrive!
