Perito Moreno Glacier

This was definitely a pinch myself moment.  From all angles and distance, the Perito Moreno glacier really is impressive. It is 250 square kilometres and 30 kilometres in length, fed by the southern Patagonian ice fields in the Andes of Argentina and Chile. It has an average height of 74 metres above water and has a total ice depth of 170 metres under water.

It is constantly moving (unlike other glaciers, it is advancing) and you can hear avalanches and calving around you. It is named after Francisco Moreno, who studied the area in the 19th century.

We took a bus from the Eolo lodge to the park to start our hike. We walked around the lake, had lunch and waited for the small boat to take us up close. We were very lucky, our guide told us that she doesn't remember ever having such a clear and windless day at the glacier. This tourist attraction alone has made our trip to Patagonia worthwhile.
