Day 3: Dolomites. Today was big!

A view on the way to the start of the trek.  Punta Santner

Compatsch to Selva via Sasso Lungo
Elevation gain 4000 feet (1219.2 metres)
Elevation loss 3200 feet (975.36 metres)
Distance 17.3 kilometers

After yesterday's 7 course dinner, a big workout was in the cards. My apple watch said I burned 2700 calories (using the MapMyWalk app). I doubt if I am burning as much as I'm eating, considering I still had breakfast and a good spaghetti bolognese for lunch at the Rifugio Vicenza al Sassolungo/Langkofelhütte, plus dinner at the hotel. Anyway, it's all very enjoyable.

The trek had unbelievable panoramic views throughout.  Truly beautiful, so the long day was definitely all the effort involved. Hopefully the photos can show a fraction of how wonderful the Dolomites are.

The trek's starting point. View of the Scilar.

We crossed the valley with views of the Sasso Lungo and the Sasso Piatto in the distance.

Our mountain guide, Gregor, who has climbed with Reinhold Messner (he's the Roger Federer of climbing).

Sasso Lungo and Sasso Piatto up close.

In between the Sasso Lungo and the Sasso Piatto on the way to the refuge.

More minor mountains en route.

Sella Gruppe at the end of the trek.

We stayed at the Alpenroyal Hotel. Great views and spa.

Tomorrow it's the via ferrata!
